Take a Stroll Nearby at Government Island
Located in the heart of Stafford; off Route 1 and Coal Landing Road, Government Island offers a bit of history combined with scenic trails. As a designated site on the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail this site offers easy walking trails for all ages, including dogs. The trails are well maintained and shaded, with occasional water views and the remnants of an 18th century quarry. The quarry was the principal source of Aquia Creek sandstone, which was used in many of the early government buildings in Washington, D.C. If you or your kids are up for a history lesson the storyboards are very informative. Bring a picnic and enjoy the day.
